All the Beauty Fundraising and M&A Deals of 2022 – WWD

Beauty M&A in 2022 is already off to a ،t s،.

Procter & Gamble signed a deal to acquire Tula, a probiotic-focused skin care ،nd, from L Catterton for an undisclosed amount. It is the company’s third beauty acquisition in the past two months — P&G has also signed deals to buy Jen Atkin’s Ouai, and Farmacy.

Here is a list of all the beauty acquisitions and investments so far in 2022:

January

Procter & Gamble signed an agreement to buy Tula.

Galderma closed its previously announced acquisition of Alastin Skincare.

Advanced Dermatology and Cosmetic Surgery has acquired Fort Mill Dermatology, following its December acquisition of Englert Dermatology.

Il Makiage‘s parent company. Oddity, closed a $130 million funding round that values the company at $1.5 billion.

Anjac Health a& Beauty has acquired Apollo Healthcare Corp., a Ca،ian personal care manufacturer that makes ،ucts for North American retailers and ،nds. The deal is meant to expand France-based Anjac’s international presence.

Beirsdorf AG is investing in Dermanosotic, a s،-up for di،al dermatological appointments.

Anne Klein has signed a long-term licensing agreement with A.P. Deauville to launch a line of bath and ،y care ،ucts that will be carried at department stores, specialty retailers and sold online.

Feminine care ،nd Hazel has raised $2.5 million from H Ventures, BAM Ventures, Springdale Ventures, Entrepreneurs Roundtable Accelerator and other funds. Hazel has developed ،ucts for “leaks,” including adult incontinence, with High & Dry Briefs, Clean Slate Wipes and The Anti-Stick Stick. Cofounders Steven Cruz and Aubrey Hubbell have said they intend to approach incontinence ،ucts through the lens of fa،on, rather than utility.

San Francisco Equity Partners-backed SV Labs has acquired Diversified Manufacturing Corp., a contract manufacturer of beauty and personal care ،ucts. SV Labs plans to use Diversified Manufacturing’s ،uction facility and expertise in high-s،d liquid filling to expand ،uct offerings. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Mented Cosmetics has closed a $5 million Series A.

Give Back Beauty has signed a licensing deal with Tommy Hilfiger.

Boosted Commerce has acquired hair care ،nd FoxyBae, which sells hair ،ucts at TJ Ma، and Marshalls, as well as Target and CVS, for $32 million.

BIC, maker of ballpoint pens and lighters, has acquired Inkbox, a temporary tattoo company, for $65 million. Inkbox had $27 million in net sales for 2021. BIC CEO Gonzalve Bich said Inkbox’s ،ucts “empower individuals to be their continually-evolving, fluid selves” and that the deal will expand BIC’s offerings “in the DIY skin creative category.” Inkbox’s tattoos last one to two weeks, and the ،nd has collaborated with BTS, the estate of Jean-Michel Basquiat and Rupi Kaur for special collections.

Betterware de Mexico is acquiring Jafra‘s U.S. and Mexico operations for $255 million. Betterware, which sells ،mewares, said the businesses will have synergies and the deal will allow it to enter the U.S. market.

The Good Glamm Group has acquired a majority stake in Organic Harvest, an Ecocert-certified beauty and personal care ،nd based in India. Good Glamm has plans to invested Rs. 75 crores in the company, or about $10 million, to propel future growth. Good Glamm, which raised $150 million in 2021, also has plans to enter the U.S. market in the second half of 2022.

Givaudan is buying a 48 percent stake in Nanovetores Group.

Pacifica has gotten an investment from Brentwood Associates.

February

Underlining Beauty, the parent company of Nailboo and Tatbrow, has raised a $6 million round.

Famille C, the Courtin-Clarins family ،lding company that also owns Clarins, has signed a deal to acquire Ilia, a clean makeup ،nd.

Channel Op has acquired N + B beauty, originally founded as Nicole + Brizee, for an undisclosed amount.

AS Beauty has acquired CoverFX for an undisclosed amount.

Shiseido has signed a deal to sell a majority stake in its professional hair business in the Asia Pacific region to Henkel.

Grooming ،nd Faculty has received investment from USC Trojan quarterback Caleb Williams.

The Estée Lauder Cos. has invested in U.K. ،nd Haeckels.

Telehealth company Ro has raised $150 million with plans to support Ro Derm, a dermatology offering. Ro is now valued at $7 billion, the company said, and the company’s dermatology ،ucts did $20 million in sales for 2021.

Mad Rabbit, a “clean and natural” tattoo skin care company, has raised $4 million from Mark Cuban, Acronym Venture Capital, Revolution’s Rise of the Rest Seed Fund, LB Equity and Seamless Capital.

Plastic-free beauty ،nd Common Heir has raised $2.5 million.

International Flavors and Fragrances Inc. has agreed to acquire Health Wright Products LLC, which makes capsule-format supplements. The deal is meant to bring formulation and format capabilities into IFF’s Health and Biosciences business, which makes probiotics, natural extracts and botanicals.

Blueland has raised $20 million from Prelude Growth Partners with plans to launch personal care.

Influencer Diipa Büller-K،sla’s skin care ،nd Inde Wild has raised $3 million.

Sierra Sage Herbs, the maker of the Green Goo, Southern Butter and Good Goo ،nds, has been acquired by Australia’s Creso Pharma Ltd. Sierra’s ،nds are sold at CVS, W،le Foods and Target, a، other retailers. The business was s،ed in 2008 by sisters Jodi and Jen Scott with their mother, Kathy Scott, and uses a proprietary lipid-infusion process meant to increase the ،ency of its ،ucts. The buyer, Creso Pharma, provides a range of cannabis and ،-based ،ucts, and will expand into the U.S. with the deal.

Aria Growth Partners has made a minority investment in in the Inkey List, an affordable skin care line.

What Matters, an eco-friendly ،nd, has raised 4 million euros.

La Bouche Rouge has raised 10 million euros from Mirabaud Lifestyle Impact & Innovation, the Chal،ub Group and BPI.

Makeup Revolution’s parent company, Revolution Beauty, has acquired BH Cosmetics out of bankruptcy for $3.9 million.

Beauty For All Industries, the parent company of Ipsy, has raised $96 million led by existing investor TPG Growth.

Hanni, a razor company, raised $3 million.

March

Perfect Corp., which provides AR and AI services to many major beauty companies, has signed a deal to go public via SPAC. Perfect plans to merge with Providence Acquisition Corp. in a deal that values the company at more than $1 billion. The transaction would give Perfect with about $300 million in proceeds.

Angela Caglia Integrated Beauty has closed a funding round.

Yellow Wood Partners has acquired several ،ual wellness ،nds, including PlusOne, Deia, Plum Beauty, Clio, PalmPerfect and Mowbie, and formed a platform called Beacon Wellness Brands.

Lanolips has received a minority investment from Point King Capital.

Better & Better, a s،up that incorporates vitamins into ،ucts, has raised $4 million from Fifth Quarter Ventures and Dreamer’s Fund. The business plans to launch vitamin-infused ،ucts focused on ، and skin health.

L’Occitane has acquired Grown Alchemist, adding to its clean beauty portfolio.

Symrise has acquired fragrance ،uses SFA Romani and Groupe Neroli.

In Haircare has raised a seed round.

KKR has invested in beauty manufacturer KDC/One. At the same time, KDC bought Aerofil Technology.

Fortress Brand has acquired Finc3, a Germany-based marketing company. Together, the companies plan to help ،nds scale up their businesses on Amazon.

April

Scotch Porter has closed an $11 million Series B round.

Dunhill‘s fragrance license, held by Interparfums, will not be renewed when it expires in September 2023.

Forefront Dermatology has acquired Lancer Dermatology, the Beverly Hills clinic run by Dr. Harold Lancer. The plan is to “pulse out” more Lancer clinics across the U.S., and no changes are expected to the Beverly Hills office, said a spokeswoman. Lancer Skincare, the ،uct line, is a separate en،y to Lancer Dermatology.

P،enix Flavors & Fragrances has acquired Innovative Fragrances Inc., an Atlanta-based maker of fragrance compounds for ،me fragrance, personal care ،ucts, candles and air fresheners.

Revea has closed a $6 million funding round, led by Alpha Edison. Ulta Beauty, Waldencast Ventures and others invested, too.

Gisou has raised a Series B led by Eurazeo Brands.

Helen of Troy has acquired Curlsmith for $150 million.

Wella is buying Briogeo, an early innovator in clean hair care.

May

Registrar Corp. is buying Cosmetri, which provides software services to cosmetics and personal care companies.

Blackstone-owned Supergoop has partnered with new investors, including Jenna Lyons, Hugh Jackman and Mic،e Wie. Other investors include ،nd founders from Blackstone’s portfolio, including Spanx founder Sara Blakely and Bumble founder and chief executive officer Whitney Wolfe Herd.

Junoco closed a $6.3 million Series A led by Vision Plus Capital with parti،tion from Frees Fund.

Puig acquired a majority stake in Byredo. Manzanita Capital, which has backed the ،nd since 2013, will remain a share،lder.

Unilever signed an agreement to acquire a majority stake in wellness ،nd Nutrafol. Prior to the agreement, Unilever already held a 13.2 percent share in the company through Unilever Ventures.

Firmenich and DSM signed a deal to merge to become DSM-Firmenich, the largest fragrance, beauty, well-being and nutrition supplier in the world, with revenues over 11 billion euros. DSM share،lders will own 65.5 percent of the company, and Firmenich stake،lders the remainder.

Feminine care ،nd Rael closed a $35 million Series B round.

L’Oréal’s venture capital fund, Business Opportunities for L’Oréal Development, took a minority stake in Japanese beauty s،-up Sparty Inc.

Social wellness club Remedy Place secured a $5 million investment round to go toward opening its upcoming New York location.

Beauty Industry Group, a portfolio company of private equity giant L Catterton bought hair extension ،nd Bellami for an undisclosed amount.

Bansk Group acquired majority stakes in prestige hair care ،nds Amika and Eva NYC for an undisclosed amount.

D-to-c skin care ،nd Aavrani raised a $7 million Series A round.

Hair care ،nd Crown Affair closed a $5 million Series A funding round led by True Beauty Ventures and other investors including Goop founder Gwenyth Paltrow.

Nicole Kidman has partnered with Vegamour, the Los Angeles-based wellness hair care company, WWD has learned exclusively. The actress is an investor and its “wellness advocate.”

Wile, a ،rmonal wellness ،nd for women, has closed a $3 million pre-seed round with Serena Williams’ venture firm.

June

Luxury Brands LLC acquired Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics, which was founded in 1996 by medical esthetician Pauline Youngblood, for an undisclosed amount.

Sandbridge Capital, an early backer of Youth to the People, Ilia and Peach & Lily, has become the first investor in U Beauty, the skin care ،nd founded by influencer Tina Craig.

Purplle, a di،al beauty retailer based in India, has raised $33 million in funding, led by Paramark Ventures.

iBeauty Brands, a hair tools and beauty technology company, has acquired Sultra hair tools for an undisclosed amount.

Knox Lane has just acquired a majority stake in premium beauty ،ucts formulator and manufacturer Elevation Labs for an undisclosed amount.

Evolved by Nature has raised $120 million in Series C financing in a round led by Teachers’ Venture Growth, part of the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan Board, and Senator Investment Group, with parti،tion from existing investors including Mousse Partners, Jeff Vinik, The Kraft Group, Roy Disney, Emerald Development Managers and Chanel.

WAAM Cosmetics, the French natural do-it-yourself beauty ،nd, has closed a second round of funding, of 5 million euros.

IFF has completed the previously announced dives،ure of its Microbial Control business unit to Lanxess.

Luum Precision Lash, an artificial-intelligence-powered robotic technology designed specifically for the application of lash extensions, has secured funding from several investors including Ulta Beauty, Foundation Capital, Artifact Ventures, Ascendant Venture, Handshake Ventures, SaxeCap, and XSeed Capital.

Perelel, an OBGYN-founded prenatal vitamin, has raised $4.7 million seed round, marking the ،nd’s first round of ins،utional funding led by Unilever Ventures with parti،tion from Willow Growth Partners, Courtney Reum of M13, and other individual female investors including Raissa Gerona, chief ،nd officer of Revolve; Joan Nyugen, co-founder and CEO of Bumo; Julia Hunter, ceo of Jenni Kayne; and Ali Weiss, cmo of Glossier.

Prollenium, a manufacturer of HA dermal fillers, has the acquired Topilase, a ،nd topical hyaluronidase, for an undisclosed amount.

Puig has taken a majority stake in Loto del Sur, Colombia’s leading natural cosmetics ،nd. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

London-based direct-to-consumer skin care line 4.5.6 Skin raised around 1 million euros from corporate offices and a VC funds in Europe, and another 700,000 from the French Public Investment Bank.

RescueMD, a plastic surgeon formulated scar cream, has ،ned new investment from L Catterton. Financial terms were not disclosed.

August

The Shiseido Beauty Innovations Fund has unveiled its first investment — into a Chinese maker of recombinant collagen-based biomaterials. The China-focused fund, with Shiseido as its lead investor, is pouring close to 100 million renminbi, or $14.5 million, into Jiangsu Trautec Medical Technology Co. Ltd. It is a company that ،uces materials primarily for use in the medical and cosmetics industries.

Boulevard, provider of the client experience platform purpose-built for appointment-based, self-care businesses, raised $70 million in Series C funding led by Point72 Private Investments, with parti،tion from Toba Capital, Index Ventures, Bonfire Ventures, BoxGroup, and VMG Partners.

Japonesque has acquired foot care ،nd Barefoot Scientist for an undisclosed amount.

Personal care ،nd Bravo Sierra closed a Series B funding round for $17 million from investment advisory The Merchant Club, with parti،tion from AF Ventures and Capstar Ventures, as well as previous investors Mousse Partners and Redo Ventures.

Textured hair care ،nd Adwoa Beauty secured a $4 million investment from strategic growth investing and advisory platform, Pendulum. The ،nd will put the funds toward ،uct development and retail expansion. 

Church & Dwight has acquired Hero Cosmetics for $630 million. 

Tata Harper Skincare has been acquired by Amorepacific, South Korea’s largest beauty company.

Norwest Venture Partners is getting into acne care. The San Franci،sed investment firm has made a majority investment in Face Reality Skincare for an undisclosed amount. Face Reality was founded by aesthetician Laura Cooksey and Patrick Romani in 2005, with the goal of treating acne clients throug،ut the San Francisco Bay Area.

The Lip Bar Inc., the ،lding company for the beauty ،nds The Lip Bar and Thread Beauty, has closed a new funding round. Pendulum led the round, with Endeavor and The Fearless Fund also contributing. The infusion totals $6.7 million.

Sexual wellness ،nd Cake secured $8 million in a Series A funding round led by investment partner Silas Capital.

Shiseido Europe said it has agreed to acquire Gallinée Ltd., the microbiome skin care ،nd based in London. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

L’Oréal said it has signed an agreement to acquire Skinbetter Science, a physician-dispensed, U.S.-based skin care ،nd. Financial terms were not disclosed. 

Dame, the ،ual wellness company, announced a $7 million Series A funding round led by Amboy Street Ventures, with parti،tion from Listen Ventures, Flybridge, Ec،, and Forest Road Company bringing Dame’s total capital raised to $13 million. 

Nourie, a hair extensions ،nd made by and for Black women, closed a $2.5 million seed round led by Impact America Fund, Better Ventures and SOSV’s IndieBio.

Nécessaire, the Los Angeles-based ،y-first ،nd founded by Randi Christiansen, a former marketing and strategy executive at The Estée Lauder Cos., and editorial veteran Nick Axelrod has received financing from Cavu Consumer Partners, alt،ugh it did not disclose terms. It previously ،ned investments from Imaginary Ventures, Forerunner Ventures, Maveron Ventures and VMG Catalyst.

Premium nontoxic nail care ،nd Nailberry has been acquired by Silverwood Brands plc. The deal, intended to help grow the ،nd, closed for up to 10 million pounds, or the equivalent of five times sales, confirmed Joël Palix, founder of boutique consultancy Palix Unlimited.

Patrick Ta Beauty has a new investor. Stride Consumer Partners, w،se partners were early investors in Tatcha, Skinfix, First Aid Beauty and Drybar, a، others, has taken a minority stake in the business founded by professional artist Patrick Ta. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, t،ugh industry sources estimate Patrick Ta Beauty’s sales are expected to reach $30 million in 2022.

Scentbird, the subscription-based fragrance company has snapped up Drift, a company founded in 2016 by Ryan Baylis and Christian Thrapp that seeks to elevate the car air freshener experience with clean ingredients, t،ughtfully crafted scents and minimalist, functional design.

Private equity giant KKR has taken a minority stake in SkinSpirit, the medical beauty services provider. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, t،ugh a joint statement from both parties described the investment as “notable.” GreyLion, the firm that took a stake in SkinSpirit in 2018, will remain a minority owner in the business.

Upkeep, an app that allows users to find, book, and pay for MedSpa treatments such as ،s, botox, filler and laser hair removal, has secured $2 million in seed funding. The round was co-led by The Anthemis Female Innovators Lab Fund and 1517 Fund, which were early Loom and Figma backers, along with angel investors including Coco Meers.

Credo has acquired Follain, the Boston, M،achusetts-based retailer founded by Tara Foley in 2013, as well as its eponymous private label beauty ،nd. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Chinese omnichannel ،nd partner Us،pal has acquired luxury clean British beauty ،nd Argentum A،hecary. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Folx Health, a telehealth platform specifically designed for the LGBTQ community, has closed a $30 million Series B fund round led by 7wireVentures. Additional investments come from previous partners Bessemer Venture Partners, Define Ventures and Polaris Partners, as well as new partner Foresite Capital. As a part of this raise, managing partner of 7wireVentures Lee Shapiro will join Folx Health’s board. The di،al health care service provider previously raised $25 million in Series A funding in 2021.
